Gibson Wines: Australian Old Vine Collection Barossa Shiraz
Rob Gibson’s Old Vine Collection Barossa Shiraz is sourced from predominately vines that are more than 100 years old with the oldest component planted in the 1860’s by original Barossa settlers. His story began in the early 1980’s when Penfold’s Chief winemaker formulated a project to identify the very best quality Shiraz grapes for Grange Hermitage. This ground breaking work developed new assessments about the production of the best Shiraz and connected vineyard block characteristics at veraison and again prior to harvest with the resultant wine characters and wine value. Gibson led the project until he left to start ‘Gibson Barossavale Wines’ in 1997.
Rob Gibson’s belief is that 100+ year-old vines produce wines with a finer, elegant style with texture and palate weight, power and finesse but no thinness.
This premium quality product is representative of the uniqueness and history of the region. Due to the age of the vines used, production is very small with approximately 150 dozen produced.
