Marisa Quigley @ Charles Melton Wines
16 March 2014, 4:00pm-6:30pm
Location: Krondorf Rd, Krondorf SA 5352
Marisa Quigley is a singer/songwriter from Melbourne who has many tales to tell. Born in Adelaide but moving away at age 6, this is her first time playing in the Barossa and in the Fringe. Engaging you from her ‘home on the stage’ you can’t help be captivated by Marisa's dynamic presence, hauntingly beautiful vocals and earthy humour. She will in one breath have you in stitches with her irreverent wit and in the next, move you to tears with her breathtaking lyrical stories. With 12 years fronting award winning rhythm ‘n’ blues band Chubby Rae & the Elevators, she has developed some serious vocal chops. Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2007 Australian Blues Music Awards and semi-finalist in the 2012 International Songwriting Competition, she is unquestionably a self-made songstress and a voice to be reckoned with. Her songs are a testament to a life well lived. Some tell the dark and desperate tales of murderers, gypsies and slaves, others are full of purpose and meaning while many are just a darn tootin’ barrel o’ fun.
She will be joined by NSW band Gleny Rae Virus and her Playboys. Swing not bling, grease not dust, laughter not tears, beer not whiskey, two step not boot scooting. Gleny Rae (fiddle and squeeze box), Dougie Bull (double bass), Roy Payne (guitar and lapsteel) and Jason Nelson (trombone) - take a leaf from the book of Ray Charles by experimenting with modern sounds within an old genre. Using traditional instrumentation, this energetic trio starts with hillbilly swing then moves seamlessly through gypsy jazz, bluegrass, western and blues. Add a good dose of cheeky innuendo and some tales from Gleny's western NSW upbringing, and you have an entertaining package of hillbilly swing music from Newcastle via Austin Texas!
Ticket cost $40 per person
