More like a craft than a production, husband and wife Paul and Janelle Amos roast in very small batches with very big smiles… small, intimate and joyful, just the way they like it. Hand roasted, hand packed, hand stamped with the roast date is how Barossa Coffee Roasters beans make their way into the cups of the Barossa and beyond.
Barossa Coffee Roasters grew over many a cup of home roasted coffee, a shared on-the-side obsession that became a passion for freshly roasted beans that seemed to elude them in the Barossa at the time. A young family with an urge to share a passion crafted with their own hands birthed the brand. A Roaster was purchased and shipped from Turkey and a shed on their Seppeltsfield property was converted into a purpose built Roastery, overlooking the vines through salvaged French Doors. Paul and Janelle set up shop at the local Saturday morning Barossa Farmers Market in 2010. Already a much loved tradition in their weekly flow, Paul and Janelle were thrilled to contribute to the Barossa food culture from the other side of the trestle along with their two small children Amilie and Lucy. Finishing up the Farmers Market to the end of 2016, the family continue to share their coffee with the region they love.
Seasonal single origin, specialty grade coffee is the focus for Barossa Coffee Roasters, echoing the boutique wine industry that surrounds them and their own patch of Shiraz that Paul plays with and bottles each vintage. The link of family grown spoke to Paul and Janelle through stories of coffee origin, and the heart and soul of where the beans are born sing their song through every roast.
A focus on People and Planet Friendly practices shape the business choices and by default the lifestyle of the Amos family; a philosophy that joyfully finds its way into every bean. "We choose to roast beans with ‘Organic’ or ‘Fairtrade’ certifications as well as beans that we term ‘Relationship Coffees’ where the Farmer’s smile is as big as ours, traceable back to the very family and farm at source. We believe this integrity and transparency translates to your tastebuds as well as the conscious choice in your cup,” says Janelle.
Living the slow life amongst the vines, ‘little red’ the roaster is at the heartbeat of every small batch of the fresh and lively roasted coffee beans. You’ll find ‘little red’ proudly declaring the roast date on each and every bag of Barossa Coffee so you can know exactly how fresh they are. Paul and Janelle are all for enjoying them while they’re still breathing flavour and life, within a month of roast date.
This unwavering ethos behind their brand and their beans is why you may find Barossa Coffee beans a little harder to find than some; but what better place than the Barossa to stand firm in your food philosophy and upgrade the expectations of your daily cup. “We often say we don’t sell coffee, we sell pause buttons.
