Meet the Producer: Tathra Homestead

Tathra Homestead is the business, passion and lifestyle of the Darmody family. The property is near Kapunda, on the Western side of the Barossa Valley. The family has been at Tathra Homestead since 1991 and has reintroduced both plant and animal biodiversity to the property, while planting an olive grove. 'Tathra' is an aboriginal word meaning 'beautiful country'.

The Darmody family are committed to the principles of organic production, implementing chemical-free production throughout the property, including the olive grove, vegetable garden and free-range chickens. The family are applying for conversion status for organic certification. This process will take at least three years.

Tathra Homestead is a signatory to the Australian Olive Association Code of Practice. The Code of Practice (COP) aims to guarantee the authenticity and quality of certified products and distinguish them from imported products.

Tathra Homestead produces varietal Extra virgin olive oils, showcasing the characteristics of different varieties of olives. Extra virgin olive oil is the natural oil (freshly squeezed) from quality olives that have been picked straight off the tree and processed as soon as possible without the use of any chemical, or excessive heat, which ensures that the oil's remarkable health benefits, flavour and freshness are maximised.
