Gatt Wines Claims World's Best Wine

Gatt Wines claims number 1 wine and 2nd top winery in the world.

Gatt Old Vine Shiraz has emerged triumphant as the best wine in the world. The Barossa Valley Shiraz has been proclaimed number one in the World Ranking Wines and Spirits (WRW) 2013.

Conferred by the World Association Wine and Spirits Writers and Journalists (WAWWJ), the prestigious accolade is a coup for the premier release of 2010 Gatt Old Vine Shiraz.

The stellar wine achieved the number one ranking with a record of outstanding performances in international competitions where the wines were tasted blind.

Moreover, Australia’s Gatt Wines ranked 2nd top winery in the world overall, just behind U.S.A. operation E & J Gallo. In the modern day battle of David and Goliath, the giant Californian winery produces 6 million cases of wine per year, while Gatt Wines crafts just 8,000. Nevertheless, Gatt Wines lays claim to a staggering 14 wines in the world’s top 100, three of them placing in the top 10. They include 2008 Gatt High Eden Shiraz and 2008 Gatt Shiraz.

Gatt Wines originate from a land of timeless beauty and ancient soil in Australia’s leading wine district, the Barossa. The celebrated region is home to some of the greatest old vine vineyards on earth.

Winemaker, David Norman was overjoyed to win number one wine in the world, saying, “It's fantastic that last year we won trophies internationally for all three of our primary grape varieties, our Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling. They are truly the heart and soul of our vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valleys.”

Gatt Wines have earned more than 25 trophies and 200 gold medals since 2009. The estate won trophies in six continents in 2012, only missing out on a clean sweep because there are no wine competitions in Antarctica.

Evaluated blind by the world’s leading judges, the accolades are testament to excellence at the highest level.

Highlights of 2012 include Mundus Vini winery of the Year (Overseas), Riedel Japan award for best white winemaker for the second time at Japan Wine Challenge, best international Riesling at Decanter Asia Wine Awards and the special FIJEV trophy for best Australian wine at Les Citadelles du Vin.

The World Association Wine and Spirits Writers and Journalists (WAWWJ) is the global association of international wine writers. Every year, WAWWJ classifies wines and wineries that participate in international wine contests. Held since 1996, the World Ranking Wines and Spirits (WRW) employs the results of international competitions to rank each wine and winery in order. Last year 630,000 wines were evaluated across almost 500 separate contests around the world.
