My Barossa Day #4 - Familiar Favourites And Evolving Cool

A guest submission from Sam Pfeiffer, Whistler Wines

There is something special about returning to your hometown after years of living overseas or interstate and realizing just how amazing your upbringing was and how cool your region is. I’ve been involved in the wine industry my whole life, growing up on the property at Penfolds Kalimna vineyard and then on my family’s property at Whistler Wines and one of the things I love about the Barossa Valley is it strangely stays the same while at the same time, evolving.

I’m up early, not by choice, but because my 2 1/2 year old daughter is up and ready to rumble! I make my first coffee at home with fresh, Barossa Coffee Roasters beans and ensure Bella and my wife, Kelsey, have a fresh smoothie in their belly.

We then walk the 750m down the main street of Tanunda to grab the real deal from Darling’s Food With Passion Café – you can’t go wrong with anything you get here and no doubt I’ll spend too long chatting to locals about vintage or rain (the lack there of)!

A quick trip to the Tanunda playground for Bella and it’s off to the Barossa Farmers Markets with some friends. This place is so well run and extremely authentic which makes me feel right at home. Can’t go past another coffee and Eleni’s Hand Made almond croissant!

From here a trip out to Seppeltsfield never goes astray. Why? Lots of space for children to run around and so much for parents to see and do including wine tasting, shopping, eating and much more!

Before we take Bella home for a nap it’s time for lunch and we can’t go past Ember Pizza. Awesome pizza’s, a great wine, beer and cocktail list and most importantly, a big grassed area and outdoor seating to let the kids cut loose!

After a two hour nap… usually just for Bella, but occasionally for Kelsey and I, an awesome place to explore is Moorooroo Park Vineyards because it’s typically quiet, they have wine (important) and you can explore the rose garden which cascades down to Jacobs Creek Retreat which has one of the best lawn areas in the Barossa where you can just relax by the fountain, kick a ball around or mosey back up to Moorooroo cellar door for a taste!

On the way home I usually grab a few local beers from Barossa Brewing and more often than not, grab takeaway laksa from Kampung Kitchen…. couch coma is imminent, and I sign off for the day!
